I have a profound interest in separating the extraordinary from the mundane. I am inspired by the presuppositions of the French sociologist, Emile Durkheim, who introduced the “profane” and “sacred” concept. According to Durkheim, the profane realm is the ordinary; it is the routine acts and concerns of the day that allows one to survive and function. This sphere consists of eating, sleeping, working, traveling, conversing, etc. The sacred domain is much more fragile, delicate, and rare. It consists of specific experiences that allow an individual to rise above and out of banal life, acknowledge a higher power or force, and, for a moment, escape the profane. Ultimately, it is an obtained knowledge that is not associated with the five senses.
My personal objective is to fabricate an environment or atmosphere that would invoke within the viewer an idea of the sacred realm. Perhaps the complete installation triggers a thought or an emotion that is outside of the profane, as well as emphasizes the beauty and rarity of the sacred. The embodiment provides an outlet and an escape from conventional pressures.
I am attracted to the delicate and subtle intrinsic qualities of glass and often use the material in conjunction with light and shadows to accentuate these traits. Also, many of the components are frail and fragile and are often combined with thin thread. These characteristics of my work support the philosophies of Durkheim’s sacred ambit and further push the viewer to consider the delicacy of preferential experiences.
